- Germany international Kai Havertz has completed his move to Chelsea
- Real Madrid were considered favorites to sign him
- Los Blancos backed off the deal due to pandemic crisis
Kai Havertz was desperate to join Real Madrid this summer before the pandemic shattered his hopes. According to reports, Kai Havertz was looking forward to playing under Zinedine Zidane and even snubbed Bayern Munich in hopes of signing for Real Madrid. Real Madrid were also interested in signing him, but the pandemic changed the clubs transfer strategy for this summer, with Florentino Perez himself saying that there won’t be any big signings this summer, and the priority is to sell players that are not needed like James or Bale.
Real Madrid dropping out of the race allowed Chelsea to steal in and prolong their remarkable spending spree this month. Their summer 2020 signings are Ziyech, Werner and now Kai Havertz. The latter cost Chelsea around €90 million, bringing their total summer spendsing to €250 million.
Real Madrid’s reluctance to spend big this summer is being criticized by many fans. The club’s finances are in order, and while the pandemic has caused an economic crisis, it’s nothing that the club can’t handle. Florentino Perez is hoping to sign Mbappe in summer of 2021, a signing that will most likely break all transfer records, that might be the biggest reason why Real Madrid are not spending money this summer.
