Another solid performance from Los Blancos sees them go back on top of La Liga.
Zidane surprised many with his starting lineup. Only two midfielders and four attackers!
We got to see Modric and Fede hold down the midfield while Bale, Benzema, Hazard and Vinicius took care off the attack. Ramos was expected to rest but Zidane decided to play the captain and he rewarded him with a great performance and a goal.
Without further ado here are the player ratings!
The goalkeeper didn’t have much to do thanks to the solid defense. Whenever he was needed, he was there.
Dani Carvajal: 6
Once again Carvajal has failed to impress. Mallorca caused most of the trouble on his side but thankfully Varane was concetrated and helped cover for Dani, a lot. Carvajal looks like he needs rest, but with Nacho out and Zidane not trusting Militao to play at right back, he will have another chance to prove himself on Sunday.
Sergio Ramos: 7.5
Less energetic than in previous games, mostly due to a knock he picked up, but solid as always defensively, great in leadership and he managed to score again. His third goal in four games.
Varane was more impressive than Ramos defensively. Playing with a two man midfield meant that the CB’s will have to cover more than usual and Varane did that perfectly. Another consistently good performance from the Frenchman.
Rock solid defensively and could have gotten an assist if the forwards were a bit luckier. Put in solid work offensively with some good crosses that were unfortunately not converted into goals. Picked up his 5th yellow card, which is a blessing in disguise as the next game is against Espanyol, one of the easier ones out of the 7 remaining games.
Luka Modric: 7.5
The Croatian midfielder put in a hardworking shift deeper in midfield, covering perfectly for the suspended Casemiro. His tasks were made harder by Zidane’s decision to play with a two-man midfield but Modric was up for the job and had a great game. Luka provided a great assist for Vinicius for the 1-0 goal too. Like Mendy, he picked up his 5th yellow card of the season and is now suspended for the match against Espanyol.
Fede Valverde: 7
You can always count on Fede to put in hardwork, and that was exactly what Real Madrid needed tonight and once again the young Uruguayan delivered. Due to Casemiro’s suspension, he also had to play deeper than usual in a position where he isn’t particularly comfortable but he didn’t disappoint.
Hazard played behind Benzema at the #10 position and had a solid match. More impressive in the first half than in the second, he was good offensively before he was subbed out early in the second half. Good game, considering the 4 man formation that we haven’t seen before.
Gareth Bale: 6
In his first league start since February, Bale once again proved why Zidane doesn’t play him a lot. Offensively he lacks involvment and chemistry with the rest of the team and didn’t contribute much, if anything, to the attack. To give him some credit, he was more involved in midfield and covering in defense, helping recover the ball 7 times, which is more than Ramos, Mendy and Carvajal. Overall unimpressive game from Bale.
Vinicius Jr: 8.5
Man of the match performance from the electric Brazilian. During his entire time on the field, he kept breaking through the Mallorca defense with great timing on his runs and dribbles. Scored the first goal with a great chip shot and could have easily had another goal to his name if he was a bit more stellar in front of the goal.
The Frenchman had a solid match, combining well with Hazard in the first half. He often found himself out wide in the second half which limited the number of the chances he had on goal. He wasn’t as involved as he has been in previous matches, which might speak more highly of Vinicius than anything els. There are no real complaints or faults for his performance.Embed from Getty Images
Honorable mention – Kubo: 7
We know that Kubo isn’t part of our squad but he played a great game and at times it took some pretty hard fouls to stop him. His future at the club looks very good!
