Real Madrid earned their seventh straight win after defeating Athletic Bilbao 1-0 thanks to a Sergio Ramos penalty. Just like the last couple of games, this proved to be a tough test for Los Blancos who despite being in control for most of the game struggled to score. Solid defense and good tactical balance were key for Zidane’s men.
Courtois’ consistently great form is one of the keys for Real Madrid’s incredible streak after the restart. He has kept another clean sheet, his 4th in a row and 17th of the season. In fact, no Real Madrid goalkeeper has had 17 cleansheets in the last 25 years!
Solid in defense and offense. Didn’t have a lot to do in defense like in the Getafe match, but everytime he was tested he was up for the challenge. He had a good game in attack too but Rodrygo’s poor form affected his game too.
This was perhaps Militao’s best match in a Real Madrid shirt. He kept Inaki Williams in his pocket by winning most of the duels with him. Militao helped cover for both Marcelo and Ramos quite a few times. His performance was one of the best today.
Sergio Ramos: 7
Ramos struggled to contain Inaki Williams because Marcelo left tons of space in defense and didn’t bother tracking back, especially in the first half. The captain’s game improved as the game went on and once again he took responsibility for taking the penalty. Doing his iconic slow run, Ramos buried the penalty in the lower left corner with a shot that was nearly impossible to save by the goalkeeper. Two games in a row he gave Real Madrid the victory with his penalties and scored his 10th goal in La Liga and his 5th since the restart.
A nonchalant defensive performance in the first half that caused a lot of trouble for Ramos and Militao on the left. His game improved in the second half as he wasn’t pushing too far in attack and was more focused in defense. He helped stop a few Athletic Bilbao attacks in the second half but overall he was very uninspiring.
Good game defensively but with many misplaced passes. He helped control the midfield and had to cover for Marcelo and Ramos a few times.
Fede Valverde: 6
Not his best game but he put in a lot of hard work and did most of his work off the ball, closing down passing lanes for Athletic Bilbao. He didn’t offer much going forward and failed to combine with Rodrygo.
Luka performance in midfield reminded us of his peak days. He was great in attack and offense. Great control and passing helped Real Madrid maintain control of the game.
In his first start since the injury Asensio overcame a rough start and was solid until he got replaced by Vinicius. His crossing from the left wing was a constant threat for Athletic Bilbao and if Benzema’s and Rodrygo’s finishing was better tonight, he would have gotten an assist or two under his name.
Rodrygo has the skill and the speed to do better in these matches. But once again he failed to impose himself in attack and doesn’t look like he has the confidence needed to play at this level. He was kept under control by the Bilbao left back throughout the entire time he played.
He had some good plays and combined well with his teammates but his finishing was underwhelming and he missed the few chances that he had to score.
