Real Madrid play their first away game since La Liga resumed against Real Sociedad in a match that could see them get to the top of La Liga table if they win.
Barcelona’s draw against Sevilla has given Real Madrid the chance to become the leaders of La Liga if they can manage to defeat Odegaards’ Real Sociedad tonight. Since La Liga resumed, Real Madrid have looked great, defeating Eibar (3-1) and Valencia (3-0) at home. Real Sociedad on the other hand have dropped 5 points in the last two games, drawing against Osasuna (1-1) and losing to Deportivo Alaves (2-0) on Thursday, in a game which Odegaard got subbed out due to muscular discomfort. It is reported that the Norwegian midfield maestro, on loan from Real Madrid, is not 100% but he trained with his team on Friday and is expected to start tonight.
Zidane has played two different formations in the last two games, 4-3-3 against Eibar and 4-4-2 against Valencia. Due to none of the players making the right wing spot their own, Zidane might opt for the 4-4-2 that saw us comfortably defeat Valencia on Thursday. This means a 4 man midfield of Casemiro, Kroos, Modric & Fede Valverde is expected. The weakest link in this formation, much like in the 4-3-3, remains the right wing, where Zidane usually chooses to play Fede Valverde, but the player looks very unnatural in that position and offers little to nothing in attack. Fede’s addition to the midfield does, however, give overall balance to the team due to the Uruguayan’s incredible work rate.
The attack will once again depend on Hazard and Benzema, both of whom are in great form at the moment. In the last two games, Hazard has 2 assists while Benzema has 2 goals. Stats aside, both of them have been playing great and have created a lot of chances for each other and the rest of the teammates, and are crucial players to Real Madrid’s offense.
Real Sociedad have struggled in their last two games, managing to score only one goal in a 1-1 draw against Osasuna. They were not able to regain their pre quarantine form yet and the chances of them finishing in the top 4 are looking slim right now. Real Sociedad have already dropped 5 points, and another loss tonight would mean they dropped 8 out of 9 points in the last 3 games. Poor form aside, their quality is undeniable. Odegaard and Oyarzabal are players that can break any defense at any moment and if in form, they will create a lot of trouble for Real Madrid tonight.
It is reported that the Norwegian midfield maestro, on loan from Real Madrid, is not 100% but he trained with his team on Friday and is expected to start tonight. Illarramendi, Sangalli, Guevara, and Barrenetxea are all out injured and will miss tonight’s game.
Real Madrid aren’t without injury troubles of their own. Lucas Vazquez, Nacho, Luka Jovic and Isco are all out injured, while Mariano who missed the last two games due to injury, has recovered and has been called up to the match squad.Embed from Getty Images
Real Madrid: Courtois, Carvajal, Varane, Ramos, Marcelo, Casemiro, Kroos, Modric, Fede Valverde, Hazard, Benzema
Real Sociedad: Remiro, Golosabel, Elustondo, Normand, Monreal, Zubeldia, Odegaard, Merino, Portu, Oyarzabal, Isak.
The two teams have met twice so far this season, once in La Liga and once in Copa del Rey. Real Madrid won 3-1 at home in La Liga, while Real Sociedad managed to upset Los Blancos with a 4-3 win at the Bernabeu in Copa del Rey, eliminating Real Madrid out of the competition.
But none of that matters tonight. Real Madrid have a chance to become La Liga leaders and play a must-win game and we expect them to defeat Real Sociedad tonight.
Final Score: Real Sociedad 1 – 2 Real Madrid
