With just 6 months left in his contract, Lucas Vazquez has managed to become a starter for Real Madrid once again.
Injuries related to muscular problems at the start of the kept him out of the field until October. He returned against Levante, where he only played 21 minutes. That was followed by 45 minutes against Cadiz, and 47 minutes against Barcelona. He played his first full 90 minutes game in the 2:2 draw in Germany against Gladbach and 52 minutes against Huesca.
From the beginning of November till now, Lucas Vazquez has been a regular starter for Real Madrid. First, he covered at right-back for the injured Carvajal and Odriozola, then he kept playing at the right-wing in attack.
Since then, he has featured in all 11 of Real Madrid’s games, playing a staggering 975 minutes out of 990 possible ones, in all competitions. In fact, he has played 10 full 90 minute games, and only once, against Athletic Bilbao, he played for 75 minutes.
It is not secret that Zidane likes Lucas Vazquez and has at times been to generous to him. But this time, Lucas Vazquez has earned his starting spot. He showed incredible versatility by covering in defense and everywhere else he has contributed with incredible hard work. He got only two assists and one goal under his name this season, but overall he has played great for Real Madrid.
Going forward, it seems that he has Zidane’s trust ahead of players like Rodrygo and Asensio, whith whom he competes for the right-wing position. His contract expires in 6 months, but rumors are that the two sides are close to finalizing the deal. Even Zidane himself has said in an interview that the club needs to renew Lucas Vazquez’s contract.
Real Madrid are currently in renewal talks with Sergio Ramos and Luka Modric as well, both of whom are expected to renew.
