- Bale, Benzema and Cristiano were often refered to as the BBC
- At the time this attacking lineup was formed, many expected Benzema to be the first to leave Real Madrid
If you had asked fans and the media who will be the first player of the BBC to leave, most of them would have answered Benzema. He was the most doubted player out of them, and many predicted that he will be the first one to leave. But now, Cristiano has left for Juventus and Bale is very close to signing for Spurs, leaving Benzema as the last survivor of the BBC trident.
Throughout his career, Benzema was criticized for not doing more. It was said that there are better forwards out there that Real Madrid could sign, and that’s true. But none of those players would have been the adequate partner for Cristiano Ronaldo and to a lesser extent Gareth Bale. Benzema was Real Madrid’s Scottie Pippen.
In the post-Cristiano era, Benzema, who was criticized for living in Cristiano’s shadow, was instrumental in helping Real Madrid win the La Liga title last season, and that was a big feat in itself only one year after Cristiano left and Real Madrid are still in “rebuilding mode”.
Real Madrid starts their 2020/21 La Liga campaign tomorrow and this will be Benzema’s 12th season for Los Blancos.
